Our story is a story of God at work
The Grace City story is a story of God opening doors to enable his Word to go out and reach many people. There have been joys and sorrows, successes and failures, ups and downs, but through it all God has been faithful. This is our story:
1: We began meeting in a living room
In March 2014 a small group of men and women gathered together to pray and ask God what kind of church he wanted to see birthed in Green Square. This group met in Tim and Emma Clemens’ living room in Newtown, while Tim was completing his final year of theological study at Moore College.
It was here that God gave us a vision to see thousands of disciples throughout Sydney and beyond who are profoundly committed to the cause of Christ. We prayed (and continue to do so) that by God’s grace they will worship God passionately, love their church deeply, and serve their city boldly. Our heart was for Green Square, but the vision God gave us was for the nation.
2: Moved into a film school
On January 11 2015 we held our first Sunday gathering as a church. It was a day filled with expectation and excitement. We met in a small room at the International Screen Academy in Waterloo and began the year in the New Testament book of Acts. Here we witnessed the way that the resurrection of Jesus sparked a movement that changed the world. We committed ourselves not to starting a new movement, but to joining and inviting others to join the movement.
Our faith family continued to grow over this time. We held our first public gathering on May 3rd 2015. This was a wonderful time to celebrate with family, friends and supporters.
3: We moved into a movie cinema
In August 2015 we had to find a new place to call home. Thankfully God provided a new home for us at Hoyts in Moore Park, where we stayed until the end of the year. While there were several things that were positive about our time at Hoyts, being out of the area made it difficult to be on mission to the people of Green Square.
Despite this, we were able to hold our first Carols in the Park in Zetland in late December. We considered it a privilege to have over 400 people from the local community in attendance us as we sung carols together.
4: We moved into the church office
In January 2016 we finally moved into our building in Waterloo. Even though we were still only meeting in our church offices, God immediately began to grow his church again as lots of new people started attending church. It was very clear to us that God wanted us in Green Square.
As the building works were completed we finally moved downstairs into our purpose built auditorium. This was the culmination of over 18 months of praying, planning and preparation. God has been good to us so far, and we are convinced that he will continue to be good to us in the future.
5: We moved into our church home
On February 28, 2016 we held a Grand Opening of our building at 937 Bourke St Waterloo. By the grace of God we pray and expect that we will be here for many years to come. We are excited to see what God might continue to do in our midst as his word is preached and lives are transformed.
6: We opened a second service
Because our 10am service was getting full, we needed to make room for more people to join us. On August 19, 2018 we closed our 10am service and opened two new services at 9am and 11am.
